A Walk in the Woods

A Walk in the Woods

The year-round population of Custer, South Dakota is approximately 1,600 people; however, the Black Hills area attracts millions of visitors each year. With attractions such as Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, several National Parks, and Custer State Park all within a short distance from Custer, the small community's population mushrooms every summer. Our goal was to create a business and gallery with retail home furnishings and gifts that can thrive not only during the peak tourist season, but all year. Conceptually, A Walk in the Woods needed to be a place where guests could discover a pleasing, surprising atmosphere which might best be compared to a relaxing walk in nature.

In 2000, we purchased the old Coast to Coast building in downtown Custer. The building had formerly been a gas station and repair shop, originally built in 1953. After the location was selected, Lampert & Associates completely renovated and remodeled the building in order to fit with the woodsy, cabin theme of our new upper-end home furnishing and year-round gift business. The second floor Gallery, which features over 20 local and regional artists, helps support the business. Monthly income from the rent of these spaces covers expenses such as payroll and utilities.
